20 Recent Movies You Had NO IDEA Were Box Office Hits
16. Materialists
Even though romantic dramedy Materialists benefitted from the buzzy starring trio of Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal, there's no denying that purely romantic-themed films have struggled at the box office in recent years, largely due to many feeling that they're simply not worth a big-screen viewing.
Materialists additionally had to contend with a mixed audience response to some of its bolder tonal shifts and more surprising subplots, none of which were even remotely hinted at in the film's broad-skewing marketing.
Yet despite landing an unimpressive "B-" CinemaScore, Materialists defied many analysts' projections to gross $108 million against a tight $20 million budget - far higher than filmmaker Celine Song's more acclaimed previous film Past Lives, which netted $42.7 million on a $12 million price tag.
For a film that proved so divisive with both mainstream audiences and cinephiles alike, it's frankly astonishing that Materialists did this well.
Sony was happy enough with the result that they're already back in business with Song for a sequel to the classic 1997 rom-com My Best Friend's Wedding.
