14. Predator: Badlands

Even accepting the brilliance of Dan Trachtenberg's previous Predator-verse movie Prey, there was good reason to be a tad skeptical of his follow-up Predator: Badlands.

Above all else, shortly before release it was announced to be the first PG-13 movie in the Predator franchise, seeming to suggest a product of studio compromise - the price Trachtenberg paid for getting a $105 million budget.

And while that may be how the PG-13 rating was settled upon, Badlands is ultimately one of the most brutal non-R-rated movies of recent years, albeit one that metes all of its violence out against androids and aliens.

Indeed, there are no human characters to speak of throughout the movie, and because watching robots and other non-people get horribly torn apart is apparently less objectionable to ratings boards, Badlands managed to land a PG-13 despite its fair share of hardcore violence.

On top of this it's also one of the most inventive and unexpectedly funny films in the Predator canon, elevated by excellent chemistry between leads Elle Fanning and Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi.
