20. The Hudsucker Proxy (1994)

In the vast pantheon that is the Coen Brothers' sprawling filmography, The Hudsucker Proxy is absolutely the pair playing in a minor key. But the truth is, Joel and Ethan Coen at their most minor still reach a level better than most directors can hope for.

In The Hudsucker Proxy, a riotous screwball comedy co-written with Sam Raimi, Tim Robbins stars as a naive but hardworking mailroom worker installed as the CEO of a large manufacturing firm, placed in his position by its board of directors to play the stock market to their money-hungry advantage.

Admittedly lacking the bite required to turn itself into a more memorable social satire, the comedy at least works as an entertaining showcase for its cast, which also includes the great Paul Newman and a host of Coen Brothers' regulars in Steve Buscemi and John Mahoney, as well as its directors' ability to craft great set pieces and brilliant gags. 

Amusing and littered with talent, The Hudsucker Proxy is a fine little comedy indeed.
