17. Small Soldiers (1998)

Small Soldiers seems to fit into that category of nostalgic, childhood favourite almost certain to elicit a reply of "Oh yeah, that" whenever it's mentioned.

Essentially Toy Story gone dark, Joe Dante's film sees two groups of toys - the Commando Elites and the alien Gorgonites - wage war after gaining sentience, dragging two teenagers (Kirsten Dunst and Gregory Smith) along for the ride.

With voice work from Tommy Lee Jones, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Christopher Guest, Ernest Borgnine, and Michael McKean, as well as a typically hysterical performance from the late, great Phil Hartman, Small Soldiers is an action-packed, hilarious, and gloriously odd little thrill ride about the joy of friendship and childhood imagination.

Weird and wonderful, Small Soldiers is far from high art, but it is a film that features Phil Hartman attempting to negotiate a surrender with a group of military-inspired toys threatening his kids, so... what's not to love?
