18. Go (1999)

Released at the end of the '90s to a weak box office haul, Go has spent the years since its release passing from streaming service to streaming service with remarkably little fanfare. 

Which is - when you consider the talent involved and the story it tells - a major shame. A twisty comedy-drama, the film follows a young woman (future Women Talking director Sarah Polley) attempting to stave off eviction by embroiling herself with drug dealers and bumbling actors.

Co-starring Timothy Olyphant, Katie Holmes, and Taye Diggs, Go does what many '90s flicks like to do - tell a number of interwoven stories that become tangled until one final payoff brings everything to an explosive, amusing close. 

There, it succeeds marvellously, but Doug Liman's directorial debut excels better than most because of how brilliantly its cast performs, how thrillingly its action moves, and how, once all is said and done, it actually proves to be quite an affecting coming-of-age tale about the dangers and financial woes of young adult life.
