13. Halved By An Axe - Wrong Turn 2: Dead End

Wrong Turn 2: Dead End is a film that vastly surpasses the expectations of a straight-to-DVD horror sequel, in large part due to director Joe Lynch's darkly comedic approach and the movie's emphasis on cartoonish practical gore.

Case in point, the film opens with a reality TV contestant, Kimberly (actual American Idol finalist Kimberly Caldwell), finding herself targeted by the series' villainous backwoods cannibals while driving through West Virginia.

Kimberly ends up coming face to face with the family's mastermind, Three Finger (Jeff Scrutton), who promptly slices her in half with a giant axe.

Lynch clearly had a ton of fun setting this kill up, given that we're shown Kimberly's body cavity spilling her guts all over the floor as she falls into two pieces, which are then carried off by the family.

This low-budget horror sequel evidently invested its money in all the right areas, considering that the practical effects - particularly that of Kimberly's mutilated corpse - look genuinely fantastic.
