20 Underrated Recent Movies You Might Have Missed

7. Dangerous Animals

To take one look at Dangerous Animals, you might assume it to be a pretty typical horror-thriller about a deranged serial killer preying upon young tourists, but that does quite the disservice to Sean Byrne's expertly crafted, drum-tight slice of nasty exploitation cinema.

And in fairness, star Jai Courtney has been a dubious hallmark of quality throughout his topsy-turvy career, but here he delivers what's without question the performance of his life as Tucker - the sadistic psychopath who feeds his victims to sharks.

Indeed, Dangerous Animals is basically two horror films for the price of one - a serial killer flick and a shark movie, and one which impressively pays off both setups with a satisfying nastiness.

Every frame of this film drips with anxious tension, and beyond Courtney's sublimely savage work as the villain, Hassie Harrison makes for quite the compelling Final Girl.

Despite premiering at the Cannes Film Festival and scoring strong reviews from critics, though, Byrne's film didn't make much of a splash on theatrical release, though will hopefully find a wider audience at home.
