Even with Kate Hudson receiving a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her performance, the marketing didn't really do this musical drama justice, which places just as much of an emphasis on the interior lives of its central duo as it does Diamond's toe-tapping tunes.

As tribute band Lightning & Thunder, Hugh Jackman and Hudson are an electrifying pair, but it's the more human moments away from the stage that really make the film sing.

Seeing Hudson's Claire Cartwright-Sardina claw her way back from the brink after losing her left leg in a freak car accident lends this story more narrative juice than you might reasonably expect, and the result is a film that's far more poignant than its frothy setup suggests.
