8. Scarlett Johansson - The Exorcist: Martyrs

Scarlett Johansson doesn't have many horror films to her name, but the last time she graced the genre in a major way, she delivered a career highlight performance in Jonathan Glazer's 2013 masterpiece Under the Skin.

And next year she'll make a long overdue genre return by starring in The Exorcist: Martyrs - a reboot of The Exorcist franchise written and directed by the great Mike Flanagan.

While The Exorcist IP is tough to get excited about these days, Flanagan is one of the few working horror filmmakers who genre fans trust to inject some fresh life into it.

And as the film's currently unnamed rookie detective protagonist, there's little doubt that Johansson is going to fit Flanagan's deep dish characterisation and emotionally complex, dramatic storytelling like a glove.

Whether Johansson is being teed up to lead a new run of Exorcist movies or is only here for a one-off, it'd be a shock if this wasn't the best Exorcist movie since the first, with Johansson serving as its strongest protagonist in decades.
