4. Going The Legacy Sequel Route - Air Bud Returns

One can certainty question the general "necessity" of a new Air Bud movie in 2026, because a 14-film run sure seemed good enough for a franchise centered around a basketball-playing Golden Retriever.

But Air Bud Returns is the series' first film in 14 years and is rather curiously being mounted as something of a legacy sequel, in which 12-year-old Jacob (Aydin Artis) finds a VHS copy of the original Air Bud and then befriends his own Golden Retriever who he trains to play basketball.

Even ignoring how absurdly convenient this all seems, of all the IP to milk nostalgia for, is there really a rich well of it for... Air Bud?

Are there large swaths of people who grew up with the original film eager to show a new Air Bud movie to their own kids? It's a tough sell at best, and it doesn't help that the teaser trailer looks embarrassingly cheap.
