20 Upcoming Movies That Just Got Cancelled
2. Alien Romulus 2
The critical and commercial success of 2024's Alien: Romulus led to the swift announcement of a sequel, and by mid-2025 pre-production was already underway on the follow-up, with Fede Álvarez expected to return as director.
By last September, though, Álvarez announced that he had vacated the director's chair but would remain onboard as writer and producer.
Despite the film reportedly having a completed script, little progress was made over the year that followed, until back in August when Ridley Scott casually announced that he'd basically killed the sequel off.
In an interview, Scott revealed that he thought Romulus was merely "OK," and that he'd come aboard to rewrite the next Alien film, noting that he thinks the franchise "needs some help."
He added that what was originally Romulus 2 has basically been reworked into a sequel to his prequel films Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, with Michael Fassbender expected to return as malevolent android David.
Considering both the positive response to Romulus and more mixed reaction to Prometheus and especially Alien: Covenant, there are many fans who would certainly prefer Scott to leave the Alien IP to younger, hungrier filmmakers.
