20 Upcoming Movies That Just Got Cancelled

13. Who's That Girl

In 2020, it was announced that pop icon Madonna was planning to direct a biopic about her own life and career, from a script penned by Oscar-winning Juno scribe Diablo Cody.

The film, Who's That Girl, was to star Julia Garner in the role of Madonna - nothing if not a perfect spot of casting - but by 2023, reports emerged that this iteration of the movie had been shelved.

Madonna nevertheless continued to chip away at getting her biopic made, and even as recently as last year, Garner claimed that the film was still supposed to happen.

But in a June interview to promote her new album Confessions II, Madonna confirmed that the film was dead, noting that Universal shelved their version due to the budget involved, while a subsequent attempt to produce a Netflix series failed because Madonna couldn't settle on a showrunner.

She added that because Universal owns the script for the original version of Who's That Girl, she can't use it on any non-Universal productions without paying them an "extortionate" fee.

While the recent box office success of the Michael Jackson biopic shows how much money there can be in glossy dramatisations of pop legends, between Madonna's steadfast approach and the massive finances involved, it's probably never happening.
