There are few recent box office bombs more predictable than Masters of the Universe, because while the film received broadly positive reviews from critics, how many people really care about He-Man in 2026?

More to the point, how many people care enough that it made sense for Amazon and Mattel to drop $170 million producing a live-action reboot?

Masters of the Universe ended up grossing just $114 million globally - barely a quarter of its estimated break-even point of around $425 million.

Amazon of course downplayed the box office failure and pointed to its subsequent high charting on streaming services, but there's absolutely no reality where this is a satisfactory commercial performance.

The film was of course intended to launch a franchise of action-adventure films which, it goes without saying, are now totally dead in the water until someone attempts to reboot the IP again in another 20 years.
