20 INSANE Horror Movie Moments You'll Never Stop Thinking About
18. The Military Arrives - The Mist
Horror movie endings don't get much more bleakly ironic than that of The Mist, which concludes with David Drayton (Thomas Jane) and a small band of civilians conceding that they have no hope of surviving the alien invasion. And so, they enter a suicide pact.
David uses his gun to shoot the other survivors, including his young son Billy (Nathan Gamble), and after running out of bullets for himself he walks out into the mist, waiting to be devoured by the creatures.
But at precisely that moment, a military convoy rolls through the mist, revealing that the U.S. Army is now successfully fighting back against the aliens.
Basically, David killed four people - again, including his own flesh and blood - for no good reason, and if they'd just sat tight for another minute or two they would've all survived.
It's an almost comically bleak ending, and yet one which the original novella's author, Stephen King, said he wishes he came up with.
