Matthew Vaughn makes a second appearance on this list with the first X-Men prequel movie. Impressively overcoming some terrible make-up effects, dodgy CGI and Michael Fassbender's rough accent, First Class served up a riveting origin story for the likes of Magneto, Professor X, Mystique and Beast, wrapped around a fantastic engagement with real-world history.

Inserting a superhero, let alone several of them, into world affairs is always a bit of a gamble, but like Wonder Woman, it totally paid off here, with one of the series' most ambitious entries to date.

Not everything holds up on repeat viewings, but without it we wouldn't have the magnificent Days of Future Past, so how could you not appreciate it?
