In the finished movie, Charles Xavier is left alone with the perception-controlling Jason, but when audiences next see Xavier he is blithely helping a little girl back in the mansion. Clearly, it's a hallucination - but why doesn't the Professor think anything's amiss with the sudden jump in locations? The answer was a cut sequence where the Professor tries to escape and is duped into thinking he succeeds. Along the way, he even believes he's busted Scott (Cyclops) out of his cell, too. This dream-like sequence arguably provides a better transition, easing both Professor X and the audience into the later parts featuring the illusory girl with the mismatched eyes. At the very least, Xavier doesn't seem as dumb anymore.
