Ichiro Yashida is the young Japanese soldier who Logan saves during World War II, and decades later, an elderly Ichiro is on the brink of death and asks Wolverine for his powers, to prolong his own life and remove Logan's "burden". Logan refuses, Ichiro dies and that seems to be the end of it, until the climax of the movie, where it's revealed that Yashida in fact faked his own death, and has been using the Silver Samurai armour to keep himself alive. Of course, Ichiro eventually gets killed by his own granddaughter Mariko, bringing to an end a rather desperate and absurd plot twist which wasn't at all necessary. Couldn't the movie have just ended with Ichiro's evil son Shingen getting in the Silver Samurai armour and fighting Logan? Instead, the script over-reached one step too far into full-on silliness, the sort that belonged in the previous Wolverine movie we'd all prefer to forget.
