X-Men Movies: 7 Perfect Performances & 7 That Sucked
5. Jean Grey - Sophie Turner
In Game Of Thrones, Sophie Turner is great at times - particularly after Sansa Stark decides that she will never be a victim again (after a serious of heinous abuses) - but her expected transition into blockbuster movies hasn't gone quite so smoothly. On paper, her casting as Jean Grey looked a great fit too, particularly as her arc would take in similar ideas to Sansa's - albeit with a superheroic spin.
Unfortunately, her Jean comes off as horribly aloof, even when we're supposed to be selling her human side so that her fall to darkness in Dark Phoenix is more emotionally resonant. And while the Phoenix side of her is cool and she gets some good moments (like melting alien mooks nobody cares about into dust), the performative element of her struggles with the power inside her fall flat.
In place of nuance, we get flamey veins on her face and it's just really hard to feel too much for the character, even when she gets her big hero moments.
