The idea of Erik hiding among normal people and having a family actually comes from the comics. His cover family and him being rumbled is a redo of what happens in X-Men Vol 2 #72.

In the comic, Magneto flees the second world war with a Romani girl called Magda he falls in love with. The two live in the Ukraine and have a daughter.

In the comics, it's Magneto's crimes that Erik is fleeing (the assassination of JFK and the attempted murder of President Nixon), and he flees to Poland rather than Ukraine. The name of his wife - Magda - is the same, and they have a daughter, though she is called Nina, rather than Anya.
