6. Sephiroth Steals Jenovah's Head - Final Fantasy VII

I can think of few moments in the Final Fantasy series more eerie and spine-tingling than the moment Cloud and his imprisoned companions awaken in their cells in the Midgar tower to find their doors open. Immediately as they set foot outside, the dead body of the guard lies in front of them, and trails of blood cover the halls and floors all the way to the murdered President Shinra.

It's the first time the game turns the whole plot on its head. Up until now you were a no nonsense mercenary with little interest in forming tight bonds or friendships. The big baddie was the President of the nasty conglomerate that was killing the planet and had murdered your friends.

Then, with the staple heartbeat that preludes Sephiroth's theme music beating in the background, you discover legendary Soldier Sephiroth, previously only mentioned in passing, is alive and has not only killed everyone in sight, but stolen the headless monster you discovered earlier. Shinra Jr. shows up taking control from deceased Daddy, only to be more interested in tracking down Ancients and The Promised Land.

It's a real WTF moment in the series, and still sends shivers down our polygonal spine! Here's hoping Square Enix manage to capture the fear and scale of this moment in the PS4 remake coming in 2017!
