10 Best Moments In Final Fantasy History

3. The Death of Galuf - Final Fantasy V

The shock of Aeris' death in VII saw the gamers inventing rumours of how to bring her back to life. FFVI tricked many of us into leaping the breaking continent without waiting for Shadow, assured he would meet up with us later as had been the game's method until now, only to learn he died fighting.

One of the most standout moments for these tragic character deaths is the fall of Galuf in FFV. Galuf spends the first half of the game as the goofy comic-relief of the party, unable to remember who he really is and where he has come from. It's only after returning to his world that he remembers he is in fact THE-FRICKIN'-KING and one of the original heroes to trap bad guy Exdeath thirty years previous.

Galuf calls upon old friends and allies and helps lead the party offensive against Exdeath. On reaching the crystals of the Second World, Exdeath manipulates the crystals to trap the party. Galuf overcomes the seal to save his granddaughter and attacks Exdeath. Overpowered and outgunned, Galuf fights on as he is continuously subjected to powerful attack after powerful attack. Yet the real tragedy is still to come.

After Exdeath flees and Galuf lays dying on the floor, the party surround him, casting healing spells and using potions - tactics that, at any other point in the Final Fantasy series would see the character healed. Galuf implores the party to fight on and, finally, passes away.
