It’s hard to believe that Syphon Filter has been lying dormant for over 10 years now. Once regarded as one of Sony’s best action series, a myriad of half-sequels and portable tie-ins drove the once-promising franchise into the ground.

Fortunately though, as fans have continued to make noise about how much they want to see a new sequel, Sony seem to have been quietly paying attention. Consequently, a recent trademark application for Syphon Filter indicates that the company is gearing up to unveil something to do with the franchise soon, potentially for a release next year.

The thing is, with the sheer amount of games that Sony have in the pipeline - Spider-Man, God of War, The Last of Us 2 and Days Gone just to name a few - it’s difficult to see where Syphon Filter could squeeze in.

Still, the company wouldn’t have submitted a fresh trademark for the series if they didn’t have some sort of project in mind, meaning that a new Syphon Filter game next year, whether that’s a sequel, a VR title or a remastered re-release, is looking likely.
