10 Most Controversial Scenes In Gaming History

9. Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2 - No Russian

Over to one of the biggest franchises in history, and one where developers Infinity Ward have the freedom to affect a mass populace with anything they include. In Modern Warfare 2, with the series back on form due to the previous iteration, the fourth mission of the newest installment put you in the shoes of an undercover operative on the eve of an airport terrorist attack. Now, what Infinity Ward were trying to do was make a comment on the participation the modern gamer has in the facilitation of violence, by way of having hordes of innocent civilians gunned down in front of you, whilst you either walked through the scene, or joined in the slaughter. Naturally the scene garnered widespread attention, fueling the fires of the opposition with cries of €˜terrorist simulator€™ and the like, but to be honest, in this case they were somewhat right. Call of Duty presented no repercussion for wanton slaughter any more than it did passing through the level all the while staring at the floor. It failed in delivering any sort of message and instead then attempted to rest on the half-baked idea of €˜well, if you did get in involved, what does that say about you?€™ It€™s a brilliant self-realising sentiment that only works if the game can ask the right questions, which in this case were missing, as Infinity Ward had to be aware of what they were hinting at, and without providing the substance to back up their initial shock tactics this was a hugely missed opportunity.
