Cut to 2007 and gamings storytelling abilities had moved on considerably, especially with what was to come in Biowares epic sci-fi trilogy Mass Effect, the first instalment of which was a crowning achievement for the medium, providing a fully interactive gameworld with branching conversation options, full facial customisation and a battle system that had as much variety as a Swiss Army knife. Could the mainstream press recognise such a thing? Nope, instead Fox News chose to lambaste the games fleeting sex scenes, something that takes up about 5% of the actual game, in fact although the ill-informed newscasters sought to say the game was marketed to kids and teenagers, EA were forced to write a rebuttal detailing just how out of hand the reports had gotten. EAs Jeff Brown royally slated the factual inaccuracies (of which there were many) in his statement (source), stating Fox had sunk to a new level of recklessness. Had you believed the endless hyperbolic stream of fatuous nonsense Fox News were churning out, youd be forgiven for thinking Mass Effect was nothing short of a porn site with a controller plugged in. Instead however, it remains one of the greatest sci-fi franchises of all time.
