10 Disappointing Sequels To Iconic Video Games
2. Dead Space 2
Dead Space 2 simply isn't as good as the original.
In all honesty, it's a fine game, reintroducing us to Isaac Clarke and the necromorphs once again as the game's primary antagonists. Yet, therein lies the issue. Much like Bioshock's sequel, Dead Space 2 simply didn't advance the attributes of the first enough, and lacked the feeling of playing something truly unique. The setting felt familiar and the enemies weren't as scary this time around because they were far too familiar to returning players.
Factor in a lacklustre multiplayer component (at a time when every single player title had an undercooked, tacked-on multiplayer mode), and what you're left with is a title that isn't as impactful as it should have been.
Though not as underwhelming as the series' third instalment, Dead Space 2 was the first indicator that Visceral Games had nothing truly unique to offer with the franchise. Dead Space peaked with the first, and only waned as time went on. A shame given the immense potential the series had.
Truly a victim of the first game's success, Dead Space 2 is evidence that even a great game isn't immune from the clutches of disappointment.
