To be fair, I've used this one a few times while playing the Guitar Hero games in particular; if you're facing off against someone and getting your ass kicked, it's very easy in the heat of the moment to genuinely believe that your controller isn't working properly. I've had dropped notes during a song and thought "I definitely hit that note", only for it not to register. The problem is that once the song's finished and the reality dawns on you that, yes, the other player was just better, you then have to stick to your claim so as not to lose face. It can then get a whole lot more embarrassing if other people use the same controller and don't have any issues at all. It's a dumb excuse because it can be so easily proven wrong. If you ever hand someone an unofficial controller, expect them to pull out this excuse if you completely trounce them.
