10 Mandatory Video Games Every Xbox One Owner Needs

5. Titanfall

Respawn Entertainment's first game is a hugely ambitious rethink of the first-person shooter genre but, then again, what did you expect from a group of people who helped make Call of Duty 4? Microsoft were quick to snap up exclusive rights to Titanfall and parade it as the first 'must-have' Xbox One title but did it live up to the immense hype built around it? Largely, yes. Titanfall is an amalgamation of many ideas but it never feels cluttered or confusing. In fact, it feels refreshingly simple and easy to play which is a huge testament to the brainboxes at Respawn. With a hefty focus on parkour and free-running, it makes movement a key feature of the game's combat. Standing still simply isn't an option; successful players are constantly running and gunning in all directions. The titular Titans are also key to the experience; hulking, giant mechs which can be controlled by the player, giving them more firepower at the cost of speed. Showdowns between Titans are satisfyingly intense and overcoming one can feel like a monumental achievement - there's a fine balancing act going on and for the most part it succeeds in keeping Pilots and Titans important and powerful in their own way. It might not quite be the next-gen must-have that people demanded but there's still a lot of fun to be had here.
