10 Most Overlooked PS4 Gems Of 2017 (So Far)

1. Pyre

Supergiant Games

Destined to be one of the most overlooked and underrated titles on the system thanks to such strong competition this year, Pyre is the third release from the mighty Supergiant Games - who also brought you Bastion and Transistor.

For Pyre, you can tell the team are operating without any overarching, money-grubbing publisher demands, concocting a game that's 60% dialogue-heavy world-building and character interaction, and 40% NBA Jam-esque 'dunk the ball in the goal' space-sports.

Yup... it's as unique and weird as that sounds, but also just as rewarding and stylish to see in motion.

Because make no mistake, Pyre is hands-down one of the most accomplished video games of the year. Its art direction, character work, world and tone are exemplary, seeing Supergiant spin a narrative of criminal outcasts working to earn their freedom by competing in an ethereal sport of the Gods, all while notions of true purpose, revolution and society weave throughout. It means that every match has a tangible character-based stake, and as you're fighting for their release, 'victory' means your favourite player could go free, forcing you to switch up tactics for the next bout.

In a sentence, it's Mad Max meets Blitzball with The Banner Saga's campfire chats, but outside of that, Pyre might be the game that challenges Horizon and Zelda for the top spots this year.

It can be that damn good.
