The oft-criticised style sub genre of 'cover shooters' seems to be flooding the gaming market these days. While immensely popular with developers and gamers alike, they are not without their detractors and many have criticised the style for making games too easy. Adding it into a popular series like Grand Theft Auto could be risky, then, couldn't it? Well no, not really. While GTA: San Andreas was a great game, its gunplay and action sequences now feel remarkably static having played the latter instalments with decent cover mechanics. The only motion players could make in San Andreas was to crouch, run or roll, leaving shootouts feeling immensely precarious and a tad unrealistic. The cover mechanic was a much-needed addition to the series, and the games have continued to become all the better for it. GTA is a series that now represents some of the most intense and dramatic action sequences, many of which would have been rendered impossible were it not for this change in GTA IV.
