9. Culex - Super Mario RPG

Seeing as how it's one of the original WTF out of nowhere boss fights, I couldn't bring myself to leave Culex off the list.

Square had a reputation for super tough bosses that require fulfilling certain requirements to unlock before Culex, but this was one of their first instances of becoming the stuff of pre-internet gamer legend.

Culex is a monster from Final Fantasy, who makes an appearance in Super Mario RPG as a secret boss. And like other Square Enix secret bosses, Culex will absolutely wreck your sh*t if you aren't prepared. Culex is the strongest boss in the game, naturally, hitting hard and really testing your reflexes with the timed button press system that has by now become a staple of Mario RPGs.

It's not the hardest boss in the Mario RPG sub-genre but it was the first and arguably the most memorable of them all.
