10 Things Everyone Hates About Modern Video Games
6. "Bullshots" & Misleading Marketing
Publishers have proven time and time again that they'll do whatever it takes to get your hard-earned cash, even flat-out lying about what a game really looks like.
Such is the cottage industry of "bullshots," whereby publishers will release gameplay images and video of an upcoming release that isn't in fact representative of what it'll look like in players' hands - perhaps most infamous, Aliens: Colonial Marines.
Sometimes this is a result of the developers realising that their original "target visuals" are too high-spec to perform consistently, resulting in them receiving a downgrade before release, as occurred with Watch Dogs years after its stunning original E3 trailer dropped.
Other times, publishers may simply pay a photo artist to retouch raw gameplay materials and make them look more polished, misleading players into expecting a more visually robust experience.
Despite publishers being dragged for this time and time again over the years, it's still extremely common in the AAA sphere.
Really the best thing you can do to combat it is not pre-order your games and wait for reviews to assure you you're not about to be swindled.
