10 Video Games That Only Work ONCE

2. SOMA

Frictional Games do make some very intense, first person horror games. First with Penumbra, then striking gold with the Amnesia series, before the sci-fi focused SOMA released in 2015.

A trip into the future (of sorts), the nature of the soul, existentialism and the power of memories, SOMA added a strange twist on the narrative that Frictional can produce in gaming form.

Whilst it would be remiss to spoil the story, instead it's best left unmentioned to lure new players to it. The game has spooky moments, indestructible monsters and a really claustrophobic, underwater setting that makes it genuinely terrifying.

But once players have seen Simon's surreal story through, the whole gimmick doesn't work on a subsequent playthrough.

Discovering that all is not what it seems (although anyone who's played a Frictional Games game will see that coming) loses its impact on a second run.

Unlike other games on this list, SOMA is the most linear game of all. No alternate endings to explore, no changing the narrative. Play it once, savour the ending, and that's all the Frictional you need.
