As excited as everyone was when Nintendo announced a new Mario Party game at E3, the series isn't exactly one of Nintendo's more consistent properties, with 2015's Mario Party 10 scoring intensely mixed reviews from critics and fans alike.

However, Super Mario Party does suggest that Nintendo has been listening to fans: the controversial car mechanic of the last few games is gone, it boasts the largest roster of any Mario Party game to date, there's a ton of nifty Switch functionality (you can even place two Switches next to one another and play across screens), and the series finally supports online multiplayer for the first time (albeit in a limited capacity).

It's always best to expect a few missteps when it comes to the Mario Party games, but it's also easy to be optimistic about this one delivering the series' best effort in years.
