Call of Duty fans have certainly been given enough reasons to be sceptical about the next game, with the announcement that Black Ops 4 won't feature a single-player campaign proving especially infuriating.

This has been replaced with Blackout, a Battle Royale-esque multiplayer mode, and as intriguing as that sounds, Treyarch's refusal to confirm the player count presumably means it's going to fall far short of 100. Expect 50, hope for 64 and pray for anything above that.

Still, considering the Call of Duty campaigns have been pretty unremarkable and workmanlike for a while now, is the lack of a story mode that much of a big deal? Black Ops 3's campaign in particular was utter nonsense, and with various reports indicating that many CoD players don't even touch the campaigns, is much really lost?

Perhaps Blackout is just what the franchise needs to reinvigorate itself amid accusations that Activision just doesn't know what to do with the IP anymore.
