13 Gaming Heroes Who Sucked Next To Their Own Sidekicks

By Sam Coleman /

1. Chell (Portal Series)

You have to feel sorry for Chell €“ the heroine of both Portal games. Her sidekicks feature minimally in her adventure but they steal the show both times. Firstly, the Weighted Companion Cube is an inanimate object but becomes your greatest ally in your lonely, test-completing existence in Portal. Near identical to the regular Storage Cubes seen throughout the game, the Companion Cube differentiates itself with the love hearts seen on all sides. Clearly a dangerous item, antagonist GlaDOS states that the Companion Cube cannot speak, and any advice it does hand out should be disregarded. Sadly, the Cube never does converse with Chell before its untimely demise. Having used the Cube to traverse Test Chamber 17, GlaDOS forces Chell to incinerate the Companion Cube to continue onwards €“ you might think it impossible to become so attached to a box, but burning that loveable Companion Cube has scarred us for life. GlaDOS herself becomes a great sidekick for Chell too, late on in Portal 2. Having been overthrown and put into a potato battery by fellow AI Wheatley, Chell has to team up with GlaDOS to prevent the now corrupted and power-hungry Wheatley from destroying Aperture Labs with our heroes still inside. Potato GlaDOS initially keeps up her hatred of Chell but relents as you progress through the game, learning more about the AI's history and origins. She never loses the sense of humour she's famous for though. It's pretty sad to say goodbye to GlaDOS when you defeat Wheatley, but she does leave you one parting gift in the final scenes of the game €“ your faithful Companion Cube, apparently saved from its fiery demise. So there you have it - thirteen heroes who need to step up their game to outclass their sidekicks. Is there anyone that I've missed? Or do you just want to declare your love for a certain sidekick?
