There is nothing wrong with a pre-rendered trailer. They are the perfect way to set the tone, style and central premise of a game. Occasionally brilliant ways to convey the simple and important information to a player, they are integral to a game's announcement.

That said... they do not belong at E3.
Pre-rendered trailers can drop any day of the year and will still receive critical and commercial responses. E3 should not be used to do what can be done at any other time.
Developers have a unique platform on which to show the intricacies of their game and to go beyond the initial flash of a pre-rendered trailer. E3 is where the game should be shown.
