1. Aeris/Aerith - Final Fantasy VII

There are two things that a man can say that you can guarantee are 100%, absolute lies: 1 - I've never looked at those kind of websites in my life. 2 - I didn't cry when Aeris died. Final Fantasy VII is held up in the highest regard as one of the greatest games of all time. Despite the fact that the graphics haven't aged too well in the last 17 years, it is still an example of perfect story, pacing and scale. But one thing no one was expecting as they chased Aeris to the ancient temple of Cetra was that Sephiroth, the main antagonist of the game, would be there and would kill her so mercilessly. Once the boss fight was done with, Cloud lays Aeris to rest in the waters of Cetra and her body returns to Gaia, becoming one with the energy and life force of the world. Aeris' death was shocking not because of the senseless brutality of it, but because it was so undeserved. From the point her and Cloud meet, in the church in Midgar, she is a soft, caring character who despises conflict and wants everyone to get along. She revels in teasing Cloud about his affections for Tifa and even melts Barrett's cold heart. Her funeral is one of the most emotional sequences ever put into a game and right there, is one of the defining moments for a generation of gamers.
