What does Burnout or Need For Speed lack? Ruddy huge explosions thats what. Split/Second took the lightning-fast nitrous-fumed blur of gameplay Burnout built its name on, and placed inside a gameplay system that let you trigger Powerplays; sequences that ranged from nearby small explosions and car collisions, to crashing aeroplanes into the track ahead, or detonating entire sections of the road and taking a detour. In short, it was fantastic, and a perfect alternative to the formula-perfected execution of the aforementioned two titles, although the game did suffer slightly from revealing its hand a bit too soon and not being able to outdo itself as the later levels unlocked. That being said, having a race with a few mates as one of them pulls into pole position only to have a falling skyscraper block their home-straight, whilst the rest of you scream past in a haze of jeers and cheers, is multiplayer gaming perfection.
