13. The Broodals (Super Mario Odyssey)

Super Mario Odyssey is genuinely one of the most creative Super Mario games that Nintendo has ever released, and it doesn't take much to see how big a deal that is. Despite this, Odyssey's villainous pack, the Broodals, aren't up to snuff. 

Bowser hires this troublesome collection of rabbits to distract Mario and assist in his wedding to Peach, and that's pretty much all you learn about them. What is their backstory? Why do they care? What is their connection to Bowser? None of these questions are firmly answered, making these characters feel like tourists in the Mario series rather than welcome new additions. 

Alongside their lack of context, they are also incredibly familiar. None of them offer anything new, just rehashes of old character archetypes, including a gross one, a tall one, a big one, a pyromaniac, and a leader. That's not even mentioning that their boss battles aren't that interesting and happen multiple times, which makes them feel overly formulaic. 

Don't expect to see these bad bunnies in Smash Bros. anytime soon.
