20 Beloved Video Games No One Admits They Hated
15. Death Stranding
Visionary director Hideo Kojima is considered by many to be one of the most creative minds in the industry, thanks mainly to his work on the Metal Gear Solid series. Fans were understandably eager to see what he would do next after his much publicised fall out with Konami, and it's safe to say when Death Stranding was released in 2019, it generated a fair amount of hype. The game received strong praise for its refusal to follow the usual video game tropes, and for its fresh ideas and concepts.
Death Stranding is essentially a walking simulator, tasking players to carry a varied number of packages from one place to another, increasing in complexity and difficulty as the game progresses. It wasn't necessarily what Kojima fans were expecting, and there's no doubt that some who were expecting another action-packed espionage adventure would've initially been underwhelmed. However, it was a completely fresh and unusual premise, and blended with Kojima's trademark style of storytelling, it earned plenty of plaudits from fans, especially once the dust of its initial release had settled.
After his exploits with the Metal Gear Solid series, Kojima has earned an almost god-like status among his fans, and he can do very little wrong. This has meant that, even for fans who immediately bounced off Death Stranding due to the gameplay not being what they expected, those who afforded it the time it deserved were able to see how unique Death Stranding really was.
