20 Clever Video Game Easter Eggs You Didn't Understand
11. Talking Hippo - Hitman
There are plenty of hidden Easter eggs in the Hitman games, but none of them come even close to the layers of complexity and references that happen when you trigger the secret hippo scene.
On the Berlin rave map from Hitman 2, you can encounter an old armchair standing in the middle of the woods, surrounded by an ominous mist. If you open a safe in the club’s offices by using the code “1989” and grab the gold idol that’s stashed inside, you can bring the idol back to the chair and place it on top of it.
A bright light will abruptly flash on the screen, and then you will be able to sit down on the armchair. Upon seating yourself, a hippopotamus will emerge from the nearby pond to talk to you.
This already sounds completely random and insane, but it's only half of what makes this easter egg so smart, because the talking hippo’s dialogue is secretly foreshadowing the events of the game.
The hippo warns you “not to trust anyone when the wine is poured," referring to a later mission at a vineyard where your handler Diana betrays you.
It’s an easter egg inside of an easter egg. A hippo-shaped easter egg.
