20 Clever Video Game Easter Eggs You Didn't Understand

19. Nincada's Secret Evolution - Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire

Pokemon evolutions are rather straightforward. Unlike the real-life counterpart that takes millions of years of trial and error, most of your digital monsters can evolve in a few seconds as soon as you reach the right level or meet some other relatively simple requirement.

However, there is one Pokémon in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire that most beginner players don't know about, because he only appears when OTHER Pokémon in your party evolve—Shedinja.

Shedinja is the secret ghost-bug evolution of Nincada that can only be obtained when Nincada evolves into its actual second form, Ninjask, and you have an empty space on your team.

If your party is full, when Nincada evolves into Ninjask, it will not spawn Shedinja, which is why a lot of people may not even realize it exists, even though Shedinja's peculiar evolution method is actually a pretty witty reference to the real-life behavior of cicadas.

When cicadas go through metamorphosis, they leave behind their shells that look like their perfect replica. In the world of Pokémon, Shedinja is this kind of leftover shell that gets possessed by a ghost Pokémon when Nincada evolves into Ninjask.

It's a fun, if not a bit spooky, easter egg.
