20 Dumb Video Game Restrictions Players Hated
9. Can't Control Own Creature In Space Stage - Spore
Spore is a disappointing game on many different fronts. The pre-alpha gameplay of the evolution simulator was vastly dumbed down in the final release to appeal to younger audiences, but while this can still be somewhat overlooked due to the overall ambition of the game, there is one restriction that Spore players unanimously hate.
The space and tribal stages of Spore are the least liked parts of the game, and in the case of the former, it’s mostly due to the limitation of being unable to leave your spaceship.
All of the space stage happens from the perspective of your spacefaring craft, meaning that the creature that you have been so meticulously designing throughout billions of years of its evolution makes next to no appearances in the longest part of the game.
The game does provide you with a hologram scout that allows you to explore planet surfaces, but it cannot jump, fly, swim, or sprint, plus it’s see-through, so you can’t properly admire your creature’s design.
The hologram feels like a shadow of the vastly superior creature stage, and considering that the devs put the ability to walk on planets in the space stage, it feels like an annoying restriction to not make the scout your actual creature.
