20 Gaming Facts That Will RUIN Your Favourite Franchise

19. Dragon Breaks - The Elder Scrolls

The Elder Scrolls series is enormous. Not only is each game massive in scope, but the lore of this world is richly detailed. Players could spend hours trawling through the pages of in-game books to learn about its various rulers, wars, and gods and still only scratch the surface of Tamriel's history.

One of the most fascinating and strangest aspects of Elder Scrolls lore are Dragon Breaks. In short, these are periods where the timeline briefly splits into alternate realities, with each outcome becoming part of the official canon. The first confirmed Dragon Break was The Warp in the West, which occurred during the end of The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall.

While fans have excitedly speculated on other possible time anomalies in the series, the real reason behind Dragon Breaks is far less interesting. In an interview with Double Negative, veteran writer Ted Peterson confirmed that this narrative device was created purely as a means to get around Daggerfall's multiple endings during the development of Morrowind.

Although Dragon Breaks are one of the most intriguing aspects of Elder Scrolls lore, they're essentially just tools for getting out of plot holes.
