20 Gaming Facts That Will RUIN Your Favourite Franchise
16. Post-Apocalypse - Pikmin
Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Super Mario, The Legend Of Zelda, and Donkey Kong is one of the most celebrated figures in gaming. One of his lesser-known contributions is the Pikmin series, which first arrived on the GameCube in 2001.
Radically different from other games at the time, this title saw players take control of Captain Olimar (which is "Mario" backwards in Japanese), who recruits the help of the titular plant-like creatures after he crash-lands on a strange planet known only as PNF-404.
While this planet's peculiar denizens suggest that it's a completely alien world, there are enough clues in the series for fans to deduce that these games take place on Earth in a distant, post-apocalyptic future.
Alongside each entry being populated with everyday items like batteries, boxes, and food containers, fans have noticed that Pikmin 3's geography resembles how Earth is predicted to look in millions of years. References to high radiation levels coupled with the drastic changes to the planet's landscape between games have also caused players to speculate that humanity was killed in a cataclysmic event.
Although Miyamoto has never explicitly confirmed this theory, it's hard to see all this evidence as a coincidence.
