20 Gaming Facts That Will RUIN Your Favourite Franchise
15. The Sound Of The Reapers - Mass Effect
Although the Mass Effect series has become notorious for its underwhelming finale and the disappointing follow-up that was 2017's Mass Effect: Andromeda, the original trilogy nevertheless remains some of the best RPGs ever made. Not only did developers BioWare create some of the most memorable and well-written characters in gaming history, but they also weaved a captivating narrative that was driven by meaningful choices.
At the centre of the plot are the Reapers, a highly advanced race of machine-like aliens who annihilate all intelligent life every 50,000 years. With their arrival imminent, it's up to Commander Shepard and his crew to find a way to stop them.
Alongside the Reapers' leviathan size, these beings also emit a terrifying roar that will send shivers down players' spines. However, the source of this fearsome sound isn't as ferocious as players may suspect.
In a behind-the-scenes interview, lead sound designer Mike Kent revealed that the Reapers' distinct cries are digitally altered recordings of a bear-proof bin opening and closing.
While a fascinating insight into the creativity of sound design, knowing that a Reaper's deafening roar is just someone opening a creaky bin makes this enemy significantly less intimidating.
