From a much wider application of their fantastic 'Nemesis system' (where any random orc can become a story-focused character) to going all-in on loot grinds and microtransactions, it was only a matter of time until Warner Bros. applied their money-making schemes to such a beloved property.

Alas, thankfully Shadow of War's combat and general setup still looks like a huge amount of fun, taking the 'one man and his elven spirit mind-controlling their way to the top' framework, and applying it to entire battlefields filled with fortresses to take over and legions of monsters to recruit.

There's every chance the aforementioned microtransactions will get in the way of expanding your reach across Mordor in a meaningful manner, but the battles will be epic, the cave trolls powerful, the Fellbeast rideable and the sword combat incredible.

Shadow of War still stands a chance at being spectacular.
