20 Video Game NPCs You CAN'T Afford To Lose

4. Mudcrab Merchant - The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind lets the player do virtually anything they want, which is a double-edged sword. On one hand, there are no restrictions to how you play, but on the other, you can often softlock yourself by killing important NPCs.

Even worse, you can accidentally kill the best merchant in the game—the talking Mudcrab.

The Mudcrab merchant is a unique NPC that looks identical to a regular mudcrab mob but can be secretly interacted with for trading.

The merchant is not only unique in that, well, he is a talking mudcrab, but also because he is the richest trader in the game, and unlike most merchants, he doesn't adjust his prices based on the items' disposition value, making him perfect for selling off all the excess junk you carry around.

Unfortunately, the Mudcrab is incredibly easy to mistake for a regular enemy, and since he isn't an essential NPC, if you accidentally kill him, he will be gone for good, along with all his massive capital for buying your loot.

It's just not worth killing him, and besides, the guy already has enough on his plate. He has a serious alcohol problem according to his dialogue, so just let him catch a break for once.
