May 11, 1995 was a storied day in gaming history for several reasons, not least because it was the first day of the first ever E3.

It kicked off with Sega shocking the world by revealing that their new Sega Saturn console would be launching the very same day in the U.S. to the tune of $399.

But later that day, SCEA President Steve Race took to the stage to provide more information about the PlayStation, and simply said "299" before exiting the podium to a raucous chorus of cheers.

Sony had instantly undercut the Saturn by $100 - a shrewd move which both hobbled the Saturn's momentum out of the gate and in turn handed the PlayStation the generation on a silver platter.

Considering there was enormous skepticism of Sony's ability to break into the gaming market ahead of the PlayStation's reveal, this literal mic drop moment caused a tidal change upon which the entire brand has since been built.
