5. Final Fantasy VII Remake

By 2015, a remake of Final Fantasy VII had been rumoured for years and years, enough that many fans simply believed it would never come to pass, even with rumours becoming increasingly insistent in the lead up to that year's E3.

But during Sony's historic Year of Dreams presser, they dropped a gorgeous CGI reveal trailer confirming that Final Fantasy VII Remake was indeed in the works.

It was an announcement that scarcely seemed real at the time, so long had fans been hearing about this apocryphal remake project which was indeed now a reality.

It was a true megaton reveal which confirmed beyond any doubt that Sony "won" E3 2015, and though it was almost another five years before players finally got their hands on the remake - the first part of it, anyway - it somehow lived up to the utterly outrageous hype.

No matter which all-timer games get remade in the future, there probably isn't another which could stoke quite this level of frenzied excitement.
